The national office of the federation is based in Kingston ACT, and supports the work of Relationships Australia member organisations in each state and territory by facilitating collaboration, developing policy, engaging in advocacy with policy-makers, working with other peak bodies and providing secretariat and corporate support to the National Board.

About the Role

The National Communications and Media Manager is responsible for communicating key messages from the Relationships Australia federation through its website, social media platforms, mainstream media, the full range of its publications (including the annual report and Newsletter). The successful applicant will be responsible for responding to national media inquiries and for referring inquiries to relevant member organisations.  The Manager will build and maintain positive relationships with journalists in key publications/websites and be in charge of the national media monitoring service.

The National Communications Manager will also have a key facilitative function within a network of communications staff based in member organisations around the country, to ensure that the federation’s communication strategy is current and relevant, that messages are consistent, and that branding guidelines are followed.

Key Responsibilities

  • With the National Executive Officer and the National Communications Network, ensure that the National Communications Strategy is current, relevant and serves the interests of the Relationships Australia federation.
  • Develop relationships with key journalists, proactively provide material to journalists, respond to media inquiries, in accordance with approved protocols, and ensure that Relationships Australia’s key messages are accurately conveyed to the public.
  • Develop and implement national media strategies on relevant issues and initiatives in cooperation and consultation with members of the National Communications Network.
  • Manage media inquiries, coordinate and liaise with spokespeople, prepare briefing notes and brief the spokespeople as required.
  • Monitor and report on national media coverage of Relationships Australia.
  • Plan and manage major events that promote Relationships Australia.
  • Support the work of the Neighbour Day Campaign Manager to assist in the development and delivery of communications strategies that promote Relationships Australia’s Neighbour Day program
  • Organise sponsorships by Relationships Australia of key conferences and exhibitions.
  • Work with members of the National Communications Network to ensure that publications and other visual media consistently reflect the national branding guidelines.
  • Initiate, edit, and moderate content for, social networking sites hosted by Relationships Australia.
  • Manage the content of the national website to ensure it is relevant, up to date and reflects Relationships Australia’s values.
  • Contribute to the production of national publications including the annual report and newsletter.
  • Provide editorial expertise to members of the National Office team.
  • Provide strategic and operational communications advice to the National Executive Officer.
  • Other duties, as agreed with the National Executive Officer.

Qualifications and Competencies

  1. Recognised tertiary qualifications in journalism, communications or a related field.
  2. Proven media and issues management expertise, with a minimum of three to five years’ experience in media relations.
  3. Demonstrated ability to raise an organisation’s profile by securing significant media exposure (within a not-for-profit environment is particularly desirable)
  4. Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity to engage in team-based work.
  6. Ability to operate effectively in a complex, multi-organisational environment, such as a federation.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work in an online environment, through websites and a range of social media platforms.
  8. Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to manage complex projects, manage priorities and meet deadlines.
  9. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage major events.
  10. Ability to use sound judgement in decision-making and problem solving.
