How NED Thinks About Belonging

Sep 30, 2026 | Blog

For many years now, Neighbours Every Day has focused on one thing: belonging – what it looks like, how it can be achieved, and the difference it makes to mental health and wellbeing, including reducing social isolation and loneliness, and increasing social connection and social cohesion. That focus doesn’t change year to year.

What shifts is how we talk about it, and the new ways we find to invite people to say hello. That’s the part everyone sees, and it matters. But behind it is a simple way of seeing belonging that doesn’t move, and it shapes everything we say and do.

These aren’t a set of rules to follow. They’re how we see belonging, and it holds true for anyone, anywhere, working to build it. They are:

  • Belonging is not gatekept. Every genuine effort to connect counts, whatever form it takes.
  • Small acts count as much as big ones. Consistency matters more than scale.
  • We build with communities, not for them. Collective actions should fit local context rather than a fixed template.
  • We not me. Connection is a shared responsibility, not an individual burden to fix alone.
  • Belonging is inclusive and culturally safe. We listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with humility and curiosity, and we design and communicate NED so it is welcoming to First Nations, CALD, LGBTIQA+SB people, and people with disability.

None of this changes from year to year. It’s been there behind our focus on belonging from the start, and it isn’t going anywhere.

Belonging Every Day – It starts with you. It starts with us.
